CAMP READ Camp Read is a Volunteer based reading program held during the school day. We help our Kiker Kids strengthen their reading fluency and comprehension by giving 30 minutes or more a week of time to work one-on-one with Kiker’s children. This program is set up to be just like reading to your own children. It’s that simple. You read to a child then listen as they read the short story back to you. Our volunteers are parents, grandparents, retirees, older students needing volunteer hours, anyone who can volunteer. What could be more rewarding than helping a child strengthen their reading skills and build self-confidence? Christie Whittington, Camp Read Coordinator for the past 2 yrs, has earned the admiration of the Camp Read volunteers and administration for the tireless dedication she has given from her heart, for the benefit of our Kiker kids. Of the 42 hours a week assigned to volunteers, Christie selflessly gave 7 hours and more of her personal time every week reading to kids. This meant running back and forth to school multiple times a day from Nov through May, to fill open time slots because there were more children than volunteers. Christie would assign herself to time slots so no child would be turned away from Camp Read. Thank you Christie! Camp Read needs a steady stream of committed volunteers to make the program success. Please consider volunteering for this valuable program. To become a volunteer, or for any questions you may have on the program, please email or call: |
